Phelps High School Day. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and Allen Y. Lew, executive director of the Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization dedicated the new Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering High School, the nation’s first public high school for the construction trades. Phelps will reopen after being closed for more than five years.

Utility Bill Help. About 1,000 more low-income residents will get energy assistance from the District Government this year. The District Department of the Environment has already given nearly 30,000 grants (typically between $250 and $1,000) for residents whose electricity or gas has been or is about to be disconnected.Read more >>

SmartBikeDC Launch. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and the Department of Transportation launched the District’s highly anticipated SmartBikeDC program. SmartBikeDC is the first self-service, public bike rental program in North America. DDOT’s pilot program boasts 10 racks located strategically in the downtown area, allowing for easy bike pickup and drop-off. Read more >>

One-Stop Center. The District unveiled the DC Aging and Disability Resource Center (ARDC), a one-stop resource center for the elderly and persons with disabilities. The ADRC will assist in maximizing independence and improving quality of life by linking people with a range of quality services.

Citywide Literacy Campaign. The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) invites all District residents to participate in a new citywide literacy campaign to encourage residents to engage in reading as a daily practice. The OSSE is encouraging District residents to document a "Day in the Life of Reading" by photographing their families, friends and communities reading.
